About Warrandyte State Park

Warrandyte State Park is located approximately 24 kilometers northeast of Melbourne, Victoria, and protects a rugged section of the Yarra River gorge along with surrounding eucalyptus woodlands. It covers areas of relatively undisturbed native vegetation and preserves important habitats for local wildlife. The park lies within the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, whose connection to the land dates back thousands of years. Warrandyte’s gold rush history is evident in historic mining relics and old diggings, which provide a fascinating cultural dimension to the natural environment. The park’s tightly interwoven landscapes include cliffs, riverbanks, and dense bush areas, offering diverse terrain for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and picnicking. The Yarra River running through the park is a key feature, providing scenic water views and opportunities for paddle sports. The area’s native flora includes eucalyptus, acacia, and heathland species alongside fauna such as kookaburras, kangaroos, and echidnas. Several well-maintained trails provide access to lookout points with panoramic views of the river valley and surrounding suburbs. Warrandyte State Park is favored by locals and visitors alike for day trips and short hikes, with numerous picnic spots, historical markers, and quiet natural areas. Its combination of natural beauty, recreation, and cultural heritage makes it an accessible green escape within reach of urban Melbourne.
